Late 16th C.
Pair of Italian Late Renaissance walnut chairs of hexagonal form with paneled exterior and carved armrests, the seats above platforms, formerly sold by French & Co., New York. Scranni plural of Scranno, borrowing from Lombardic skranna (“bench”). These chairs were more than likely in an ecclesiastical setting with raised and protected footrest area providing warmth on stone floors. Showing wear on armrests consistent with age and use, retaining original warm patina
