Walnut and Ebonized Marble Top Demilune Console

Turn of 19th C.
This console has the typical characteristics of early neoclassical period furniture from Lucca, Italy…slender, graceful straight lines with a touch of regional personality. Closer to the sea than most Tuscan cities, Lucca became famous for its elegance as it borrowed design traits from the vastness of the Mediterranean. In this case it is the small but detailed paw feet. Just as important as the feet is the shape of the bottom of the legs. The three legs curve forward to give this console a whimsical sense of movement. This design characteristic would also allow the console to sit flush against a wall if there was a baseboard at the floor. The feet were originally ebonized. It is made entirely of walnut with solid legs and secondary wood and a veneered front apron.
